Ballet Arkansas’ 21|22 main stage season begins with a vibrant multimedia world premiere of The Great Gatsby, designed in collaboration with Cranford Co. and the production team at UA-PTC CHARTS Theater in North Little Rock (3000 West Scenic Drive, North Little Rock AR 72118). A roaring 2020’s start to the season, Gatsby is filled with glitz, glamour, and murder – just in time for Halloween.
Ballet Arkansas’s unique telling of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale is complemented by stunning original choreography by Executive and Artistic Director Michael Fothergill, vivid imagery, and narration. Fothergill’s The Great Gatsby features era music by Bob Wilson and His Varsity Rhythm Boys, Georges Bruns & His Rag-a-Muffins, Johnny Guarnierni, Robert Farnon and His Orchestra, Fapy Lafertin Quartet & Hadi Mouallem, Hill Bowen and His Orchestra, mixed with music by Pascal Roge and Eric Parkin, and Francis Poulenc.
“The Great Gatsby takes us back to a simpler time, filled with raw emotion, era music, and storyline unique to the period. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s writing has become immortalized due to his telling of passion and tragedy between characters as rich as any in literature. It’s the perfect premise for a ballet,” says choreographer and Executive and Artistic Director Michael Fothergill. “I first read The Great Gatsby in elementary school, and have probably read it a dozen times since. While I’ve remained true to the essence of Fitzgerald’s writing, I’ve taken liberties to make the story my own, and to reflect the imagery and story I think our audiences will respond to. Some of the folks that attend will have read the novel and others seen the movie. Some may have no reference to the plot or characters. We’ve got to educate and entertain a varied audience base and thus, choreography and staging has to reflect that.”
“After 18 months of innovative digital, collaborative and open air programming, we are thrilled to return to the theatre for in-person performances. The technological capabilities of UA-PTC CHARTS Theater are the perfect complement to “The Great Gatsby” production and this venue was a large part of the original vision for the ballet. This season the public has the opportunity to experience “Beauty In Action” in a variety of settings and formats, through both traditional and non-traditional programming,” says Catherine Fothergill, Associate Artistic Director.
